Who are the Foyer Federation?

The Foyer Federation was established in 1992 to stimulate and promote the development of the Foyer concept in the UK. The Federation provides a range of services to operational and developing Foyers, raises awareness the work Foyers do, and represents the movement at all levels of decision-making throughout the UK.

All young people need a home, support and a springboard into independent living, learning and work. Some don't get it. Foyers fill the gap.

With 134 Foyers across the UK, the UK Foyer movement provides over 5,000 homeless young people each year with accommodation integrated with education, training and employment opportunities.

Foyer's Vision

The Foyer Federation is the umbrella organisation of the UK Foyer movement. Their aim is to:

  • establish safe and affordable accommodation in the UK's most deprived urban and rural communities, including many inner-city areas.

  • support over 5,000 disadvantaged and homeless 16 to 25 year-olds each year, plus a further 5,000 non-residents. Most are further disadvantaged through abuse, drug and alcohol misuse, truancy or school exclusion, crime and unemployment.

  • deliver an holistic training programme which enables each young person to achieve social and economic independence through access to education, training and employment opportunities.

Programmes and Activities-

The UK Foyer movement resists the 'no home - no job - no home' cycle that many vulnerable young people find themselves trapped in, and is at the forefront of efforts to reduce youth homelessness and social exclusion.

There are currently over 130 Foyers throughout the UK, providing safe accommodation and training opportunities for young people who, without support and encouragement, are at risk of remaining on the fringes of society.

Foyers are unique in that they offer a holistic approach to the problems faced by many young people and bring together under one umbrella the services needed to support their transition to independence. By making available a complete package of accommodation, personal support, and access to basic, personal and work skill projects, Foyers maximise a young person's full potential, thus enabling them to achieve economic and personal independence.

Currently 39% of homeless 16 to 25 year-olds entering Foyers are in education, training or work. On leaving, that figure increases to 75%.
