Karibu has launched its three year ‘Foyer Health’ programme which will explore the many meanings of health, how the different aspects of health are inter-related. The programme promotes the importance of health and well being for young people aged 16 – 25 living at the Foyer.
On the day there were talks from Inspirational Speaker Winifred White on food nutrition and Kate Gibbs, Headwize Project Coordinator on mental well being; free massage and relaxation treatment courtesy of New Collage Nottingham; smoothie and fresh juice making workshops; Capoeira demonstration from Cordão De Ouro; Nintendo Wii completion and a Healthy Buffet!
A major component of independence is health in its widest sense. There are many influences, such as housing, employment, money, training, diet, leisure and relationships, which all have an impact upon a young person’s health. There are also many different perceptions of health, such as a sense of physical fitness, being free from disease, having stamina and energy, being in control of and content with one’s life, and having good relationships. Winifred White said “To care for the present and future health of their residents, Karibu is finding ways not only to manage illness, but also both to prevent illness and to promote healthy living”.
Caris Henry, tenant Engagement, Policy and Communications Officer said “We want to empower young people to take a healthy step forward and make informed choices about healthy living. With the help of many external agencies such as New College Nottingham and Nottingham City Leisure we will enable young people to develop the knowledge and skills to make the right choices about their health and well-being.”
